fair pitches only® is an initiative by members of the epda.
We believe that the current culture of pitching devalues the work of design agencies and puts their businesses at risk. At the same time,
it rarely leads to the solutions a client really needs.
We believe that fair, transparent and respectful pitches lead to better results for agencies and clients alike.
7 Terms on which we all agree
Clear objective
We expect clear information about the objective of the pitch and an honest intention to realize the project.
Limited participants
We recommend a maximum of three participants and expect equal conditions and equal chances for all of them.
Proper brief
The basis of the pitch must be a detailed, written brief that remains the same throughout the project.
Realistic timing
A reasonable timescale will depend on the scope of the word required.
Fair usage
The rights to all creative work produced during the pitch remain with the agency.
Transparency
We rely on transparent decision-making and communication.
Fair pay
We only participate in paid pitches.
The winner gets payment in full.
Start after budget approval.
If the pitch is cancelled, the pitch fee is due.
The scope must be relevant.
Good reasons for agencies
- Grow the cake instead of fighting over a piece
- Get paid for your work
- Worry less
- Stand up for the good cause
- We got your back
Good reasons for clients
- Get the best people for the job
- Let us be your guide
- Treat others like you want to be treated
- Get a partner, not a packaging
- Create a good working environment
- Act sustainably
What better way?
Instead of pitches, we suggest clients ..
Chemistry session
A meeting with a good discussion is usually most effective in finding out if you want to work with that agency and if the team understands you and your problem.
References
Ask the agency for references on similar projects to get an idea of how they work and what results they can achieve.
Workshop
You could have a compact, paid working session with the agency, focusing on a specific topic, to let them outline their specific approach to your project.
From small to big
You might also consider giving an agency a smaller project first, before starting a bigger one.
